Country vs language
The GeoGallery block’s Match images by setting decides what the two-letter code in a filename means. Change it in the theme editor: select the GeoGallery block on your product template, pick an option and click Save.
The three options
Section titled “The three options”Language (default)
Section titled “Language (default)”The code is the storefront language the customer is browsing in. FR_shirt.jpg shows on the French version of your store (for example /fr/products/shirt), wherever the customer is.
Use it for: text inside images, such as infographics, size charts and feature callouts.
Country
Section titled “Country”The code is the customer’s country from Shopify Markets. US_shirt.jpg shows to customers in the United States, whatever language they browse in.
Use it for: things that differ by region, such as packaging, compliance labels, plugs, local models or region-specific offers.
Country first, then language
Section titled “Country first, then language”For each product, GeoGallery checks whether the product has any image for the customer’s country.
- If it does, the country images are used for that product.
- If it doesn’t, the language images are used instead.
Use it for: mixing both, for example GB_ images for UK customers and EN_ images for every other English-language visitor.
When a country code is also one of your store’s languages (FR, DE, IT, ES…), it only wins when the customer is browsing in that language. A customer in France browsing your store in English sees your EN_ images, not the FR_ ones, which may have French text.
Which should I pick?
Section titled “Which should I pick?”| You want to… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Show translated text in images | Language |
| Show different packaging or labels to the US and UK | Country |
| Use country images where you have them and language images everywhere else | Country first, then language |
| Use images made with AI translation | Language, or Country first, then language |
AI translations are named with language codes (FR_, DE_…), so they’re meant for Language mode or Country first, then language.
Codes that mean two things
Section titled “Codes that mean two things”Some two-letter codes are both a language and a country:
AR: Arabic (language) or Argentina (country)SV: Swedish (language) or El Salvador (country)
GeoGallery reads the code according to your Match images by setting, so name your files to suit the mode you’ve chosen. This is why Language stays the default for existing stores.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- Language mode needs the language published in Settings > Languages (or Settings > Markets), so customers can reach that storefront language.
- Country mode needs Shopify Markets set up so Shopify knows the customer’s country.
Next: test it on your storefront.
